Question: Do I need to seek counsel to patent an idea?

I’m sure you’ve seen the plethora of iPhone applications; like, depositing a check by taking a picture of it, the credit card swipe device, etc… Anyway, I have this smart and viable idea for a new iPhone application. I’ve been searching through their app store and it hasn’t been taken. I know creating an iPhone application or an invention for that matter is very difficult, time-consuming, and expensive, but I must try. I’m clueless, how exactly do I get my idea patented? Do I need to seek legal counsel? Any candid advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Answer: If you have filed a patent application in the past, it might be something you can try now without a lawyer. But doing it without a lawyer might end up costing you more in the end, especially if you end up needing to hire a lawyer to fix what you did.
